Why is it that true interdisciplinary work, that which calls upon several paradigms to construct knowledge appropriate to a given situation, in the field of films studies can be counted, in France at least, on the fingers of one hand ? Indeed, the cinema, due to its character as a «total social fact », should be considered, par excellence, an object whose study calls for different perspectives. Various institutional, ideological, epistemological reasons will be offered here to explain the situation. The author draws attention to the « interpretation quarrel » that opposed U. Eco to R. Rorty and defends the use of pragmatic sociology and particularly its paradigm of translation.
